Door of Reconciliation

This door at St Patrick’s Cathedral has a hole cut through it where a lord who had taken refuge in the cathedral was asked to shake hands for a truce with the lord he was fighting with. He reluctantly put his hand out to shake. What I am wondering is how the other lord cut the hole in the door without the church getting very upset.
